    Wahl Bravura Lithium Ion clipper

Owners doing face, feet and trim work between salon visits, or full cuts on most coats.

Search Amazon for dog clippers and you get hundreds of results, most of them kits that will do a Yorkie’s feet once and then pull on anything thicker. Groomers keep buying about seven machines. This page is that list, with one honest answer for each kind of buyer, and the longer guides linked for the reasoning. If you already know whether you are a salon, an owner with a small dog, an owner with a doodle or a groomer in a van, skip to that line in the table.

Our picks are research based: we compared the manufacturers’ published specifications for motor, blade system, speed, runtime and weight, and the work each clipper is built for. We do not claim side by side bench testing. Every pick here was also verified against its Amazon listing this week.

Our Top Picks

Best dog clipper for a salon, and for a doodle or poodle body at home

Andis UltraEdge AGC Super 2 Speed, Best Overall

The clipper most working groomers own: two speeds, a rotary motor that does not slow in dense curly coat, and a housing that runs comparatively cool and quiet for a corded machine. It takes every standard A5 detachable blade, so lengths swap in a second and a drawer of blades carries over from any other brand. For an owner clipping a doodle at home it is the single best buy on this page. It is corded, and more machine than a quick tidy of the face and feet needs.

Best clipper for an owner with a small or medium dog

Wahl Bravura Lithium Ion, Best for Most Owners

The cordless clipper groomers reach for on faces, feet and trim work, and the best crossover into home use. Light, notably quiet, about 90 minutes of battery, and an adjustable 5 in 1 blade that covers five lengths without a blade change; the Wahl stainless comb set takes it to every length in a breed haircut guide. The 5 in 1 blade is the wrong tool for a dense doodle body, which is why the AGC Super sits above it.

Best clipper for the dog that has gone four months

Wahl KM Inspire, Best for Thick and Matted Coats

A two speed brushless motor that runs cool through heavy coat and does not slow when the blade packs, which is exactly the failure a felted coat produces in lesser machines. It takes any standard A5 blade. It was out of stock on Amazon when we checked at the end of October; the Wahl KM Velocity and the Andis AGC Super are the alternatives, and our thick coat guide compares them.

Best for mobile groomers and all day faces and feet

Andis Pulse ZR II, Best Cordless

A genuine professional cordless: swappable lithium ion batteries so a full day never stops for a charger, five speeds, and it takes detachable A5 blades, so it clips a doodle body on one battery. In a van or on a dog that backs away from a cord, nothing else does this. Roughly eighty minutes per battery, so a working day needs the spare charged, and it costs what a professional cordless costs.

Best when one corded clipper has to do nervous small dogs and dense big ones

Andis Excel 5 Speed, Best for Speed Control

The AGC motor and blade system with five speeds instead of two: a slow, quiet setting for faces and anxious dogs, full speed for a dense coat. If the salon has one clipper for everything, the range is the reason to pay the difference over the AGC Super. A 14 foot cord; corded only.

Best mid price kit for a first home groomer

Andis Vida 5 in 1 Cordless Kit, Best First Kit

A slim cordless from Andis with an adjustable 5 in 1 blade and an eleven piece kit that includes the guide combs, so every length in a breed haircut guide is in the box. More clipper than a budget kit, less money than a Bravura, and lighter duty than either professional machine: on a small or medium coat it is the honest middle of the range.

Best cheap clipper for a sound sensitive small dog

oneisall Low Noise Kit, Best Budget for Nervous Dogs

The budget kit that is everywhere in home grooming for a reason: it costs a fraction of a professional tool, it is quiet enough that many noise shy dogs tolerate it, and it handles light work on a small coat perfectly well. It is a light duty clipper; thick or matted coat stops it, and when the dog outgrows it the Vida or the Bravura is the next step.

How to choose a dog clipper

  • Start from the coat, not the price. A dense curly or wool coat (doodle, poodle, bichon, cocker) needs a detachable blade machine with a rotary or brushless motor. A small or medium straight coat is fine on a 5 in 1 clipper. A double coat (Husky, Golden, Shepherd) should not be clipped at all; see why you should never shave a double coated dog.
  • Blade system decides the long run. Standard A5 detachable blades fit Andis, Oster and Wahl KM machines alike and swap in a second; a 5 in 1 blade is one blade and a comb set; a fixed kit blade is what it is.
  • Corded for the table, cordless for the reason. A cord never runs out and never slows; go cordless only when the cord is the problem.
  • Budget for the combs and a second blade. The clipper alone cuts one or five short lengths. The lengths in every breed haircut guide come from stainless guide combs or a #7FC, #5FC or #4FC blade.
  • Quiet matters more than speed on a nervous dog. The Bravura and the oneisall kit are the quiet ones; the Excel 5 Speed has a slow setting for the same reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

What clippers do professional dog groomers use?

Corded detachable blade machines on the A5 blade system: the Andis UltraEdge AGC Super 2 Speed and Excel 5 Speed, the Wahl KM Velocity and KM Inspire, and the Oster A5 Turbo, with a cordless Andis Pulse ZR II or a Wahl Bravura beside them for faces and feet. The common thread is a rotary motor that holds its speed in dense coat and a blade that detaches so lengths swap in a second.

What is the difference between a professional clipper and a home kit?

Three things. The motor: a rotary or brushless motor keeps its speed under load, a magnetic kit motor slows and pulls. The blade: a detachable A5 blade sheds heat and coat and swaps for another size; a fixed kit blade packs and heats. The combs: stainless guide combs hold their length, plastic kit combs flex. A professional clipper costs three to ten times more and lasts ten times longer.

Can I use human clippers on a dog?

Not well. Human hair clippers are built for fine, thin hair and a flat surface; dog coat is denser and dirtier, so the blade packs, heats and pulls. A proper dog clipper costs about the same as a good human one and will not burn the dog.

Cordless or corded?

Corded for a fixed table and any thick coat, because a dense coat drains a battery and slows a cordless motor. Cordless when the cord is the problem: a van, a dog that backs away from the cable, or faces and feet done all day. The Pulse ZR II is the one cordless that does both.

Which blade should come with it?

A #10 is the universal first blade for sanitary areas and pads and the base under guide combs. The body lengths most pet cuts use are a #7FC, #5FC or #4FC, or a stainless guide comb over a #30. Our Andis blade guide explains the whole numbering system.
