The Andis blade system is the one most of the grooming world runs on, including groomers who own an Oster or a Wahl, because every professional detachable blade clipper takes the same A5 blade. The numbering is old, it runs backwards, and the letters matter. This page explains it once, and then lists the short set of blades and the two bottles that cover almost every pet cut.

Lengths and compatibility below come from the manufacturer's published specifications and the listings for each model. For how Andis blades compare with Oster and Wahl, see best clipper blades for dogs.

How to read an Andis blade number

  • Higher number, shorter cut. A #40 is a surgical shave, a #30 leaves half a millimetre, a #10 about 1.5mm, a #7 about 3mm, a #5 about 6mm, a #4 about 9.5mm, a #3 about 13mm.
  • FC means finish cut. Fine, close teeth that leave a smooth surface on a clean coat. A plain number is a skip tooth: every other tooth is shorter, so it feeds heavy or packed coat but leaves tracks. Pet grooming is almost all FC.
  • T means wide. A T-10 or a T-84 is a wide T blade with a broader cutting edge, faster on a big dog's body, clumsy in a tight spot. It is not the plain blade of the same number.
  • UltraEdge is steel, CeramicEdge is steel with a ceramic cutter. Same sizes, same fit; the ceramic runs cooler and cannot be sharpened.
  • The model number is the size. 64071 is a #10, 64121 a #7FC, 72630 a #5FC, 72615 a #4FC, 64075 a #30, 72620 the CeramicEdge #4FC. Listing titles often drop the size, so search the number.

The blades, in the order to buy them

The first blade for any detachable blade clipper

Andis UltraEdge #10, Buy This One First

About 1.5mm, which is the right length for sanitary areas, belly and pads on almost every breed, and the base blade under most guide combs on a fine coat. A professional Andis ships with one; the second #10, swapped in when the first gets hot, is the most useful blade purchase a groomer makes. Model 64071. Be careful with the 22305, which is the T-10 wide blade sold under a similar name.

The classic short summer body on a poodle, schnauzer or doodle

Andis UltraEdge #7FC, The Short Body Clip

Around 3mm with a finish cut edge: short enough that the coat stays easy for weeks, long enough to leave colour and texture. On a matted coat it chews, so mats want a #10 under them first. Model 64121.

A 6mm body without a guide comb

Andis UltraEdge #5FC, The Medium Body Length

A quarter inch finish cut, the medium body length when the owner wants coat left on. Cutting it with a blade rather than a comb over a #10 gives a smoother, faster finish on a coat that is clean, brushed out and dry. Model 72630.

The plush teddy bear body most owners actually ask for

Andis UltraEdge #4FC, The Long Body Length

Three eighths of an inch, the longest common finish blade, with deep teeth that feed a thick coat. It wants a well brushed, dry coat or it leaves tracks. Model 72615.

Long sessions on big dogs at the #4 length

Andis CeramicEdge #4FC, The Cool One

The same 9.5mm cut with a ceramic cutter over the steel comb. Ceramic does not conduct heat the way steel does, so the blade stays on the dog longer between sprays, which is why groomers keep one in the size they run longest. It chips if dropped and cannot be resharpened. Model 72620.

The base blade under snap on guide combs

Andis UltraEdge #30, The Comb Blade

Half a millimetre is too close for skin work on most pets, but it is the blade guide combs are designed to sit over: the comb sets the length and the #30 gives the cleanest feed beneath it. Also the right blade for pads on a dog whose hair packs between the toes. Model 64075.

The two bottles that make a blade last

Three drops, every dog

Andis Clipper Oil

Three drops across the teeth with the clipper running, before every dog, keeps the cutter gliding and is the single biggest factor in how many grooms a blade does before it needs sharpening. A spray is not a substitute.

A hot blade mid groom

Andis Cool Care Plus

Coolant, cleaner, lubricant, disinfectant and rust preventer in one quick drying can. A hot blade clips badly and burns skin; a thirty second spray is the difference between finishing the dog and swapping blades. When oil and spray are not enough, our guide to sharpening clipper blades covers the rest.

Guide combs: the lengths past a #4

Anything longer than 9.5mm comes from a snap on guide comb over a #30 (or a #10 on a fine coat). The Andis professional clippers take the standard A5 comb sets; the stainless A5 comb set we recommend in the doodle clipper guide snaps on a #10, #15 or #30 and covers the teddy bear and puppy cut lengths. It does not fit a 5 in 1 blade.

Which clipper do these go on?

Every blade on this page fits the Andis AGC2, AGC Super, Excel 5 Speed, Pulse ZR II and Emerge, and the Oster A5 and Wahl KM machines. Our Andis clipper comparison picks between them. Salons that run on GroomBoard record the blade and comb used on every pet so the next groom starts from the same numbers; the free trial takes a photo of a paper book and does the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the letters on an Andis blade mean?

FC stands for finish cut, a fine tooth edge that leaves a smooth surface; a plain number without letters is a skip tooth blade that bites into heavy or matted coat but leaves a rougher finish. A T in front of the number means a wide T blade with a broader cutting edge. The 22305 T-10, for example, cuts the same length as a 64071 #10 but on a wider head, so it is not a direct substitute in tight areas.

Do Andis blades fit Oster and Wahl clippers?

Yes. UltraEdge and CeramicEdge blades are standard A5 detachable blades and fit the Oster A5 and A6, the Wahl KM series and every Andis professional clipper. The exceptions are 5 in 1 adjustable blade clippers such as the Andis Vida or the Wahl Bravura, which use their own blade.

UltraEdge or CeramicEdge?

UltraEdge is carbon steel through and through. CeramicEdge keeps the steel comb and swaps the moving cutter for ceramic, which does not conduct heat the way steel does, so the blade stays cooler on a long session. Ceramic chips if dropped and cannot be resharpened the way steel can. Most groomers run UltraEdge for everything and keep one CeramicEdge in the size they use longest.

How many blades do I actually need?

Five cover almost every pet groom: #10 for sanitary, pads and the base under combs on a fine coat, #30 as the base under combs on everything else, and #7FC, #5FC and #4FC for the three common body lengths. A second #10 to swap in when the first gets hot is the most useful sixth.

What are the Andis model numbers for each size?

The common ones: 64071 is the #10, 64121 the #7FC, 72630 the #5FC, 72615 the #4FC and 64075 the #30. The CeramicEdge #4FC is 72620. Searching the model number is the surest way to land on the right size, because listing titles often leave the size out.
