How much does dog grooming cost in 2026?

Most dog owners pay $40 to $90 for a full groom, with a national average around $65. The biggest factors are your dog's size and coat type — a small short-haired dog might be $45, while a large doodle that needs hand-scissoring and de-matting can run $120 or more. A simple bath-and-brush costs less than a full haircut, and mobile grooming adds roughly 20 to 40% for the door-to-door convenience.

What drives the price up

Three things add the most to a grooming bill. First, matting: a tangled coat takes far longer to work through, so groomers charge a de-matting surcharge or shave the coat short — the cheapest fix is regular brushing (see our matting prevention guide). Second, coat type: curly and double coats need more drying and finishing time. Third, add-on services like teeth brushing, nail grinding, de-shedding, and flea baths, which usually run $10–$25 each.

How much should you tip a dog groomer?

A 15–20% tip is standard, the same as for a haircut or other personal service. Tip toward the higher end for senior or anxious dogs, heavy de-matting, or holiday appointments — grooming those takes real skill and patience.
