Paw hair is the part of home grooming most owners skip and most dogs would thank them for. Hair that grows past the pads collects snow balls in winter and burrs in summer, holds wet mud against the skin, and turns a hardwood floor into an ice rink for a dog whose pads cannot grip. A small trimmer fixes it in a few minutes a month.
Our picks are research based: we compared the manufacturers’ published specifications for noise, battery and blade, and looked at who each trimmer is built for. We do not claim side by side testing.

Best paw trimmer for most dogs
Andis Emerge Trim, Best Overall
Andis built the Emerge Trim as a cordless finishing trimmer for the face, ears and paw pads. It runs a brushless motor that Andis describes as ultra quiet, holds about an hour and a half of power on a lithium battery that charges over USB C with a percentage display, and comes with an adjustable comb from 1/8 to 1/4 inch so you can leave a little hair on the top of the foot. At about five ounces it is easy to control between small toes. It costs more than budget trimmers, which is the trade for a professional brand and a quieter motor.

Wahl Fidela, Best for Close Pad Work
Wahl designed the Fidela for sensitive areas: face, ears, paws and the sanitary area. Its contour blade cuts very close, which is what you want to clear hair level with the pads, and Wahl rates the lithium battery at up to two hours with USB C charging. It is light, a little under five ounces. Because it cuts so close, keep it flat and do not push it into the gaps between the pads.

oneisall Double Blade Paw Trimmer, Best Budget
A small cordless trimmer with two heads, a narrow one for between the toes and a wider one for the outline, and two speeds. oneisall rates it at about 49 decibels, quiet enough that many nervous dogs tolerate it, with up to three hours of run time on a two hour charge. It does not have the build or blade quality of the Andis or Wahl, so treat it as an affordable maintenance tool rather than a professional one.

Wahl Bravura Lithium, Best All in One
If you also trim the face, sanitary area or a short coat between grooms, the Bravura covers paws and much more. Its adjustable 5 in 1 blade changes length without swapping blades, and it runs about 90 minutes on a charge. It is bigger than a dedicated paw trimmer, so between the toes of a small dog the Andis or Wahl Fidela is easier to steer.

- Quiet. The trimmer works inches from a sensitive paw. A quiet motor is the difference between a two minute job and a wrestling match.
- Narrow, close cutting blade. It has to fit between toes and take hair down to the pad.
- Cordless and light. You are holding a paw with one hand and steering with the other.
- A battery that lasts four paws. Any of our picks covers several dogs per charge.
Safety: the pads come first
Paw pads and the skin between them are easy to nick. Keep the blade flat, take hair level with the pads rather than digging between them, check the blade temperature often, and never use the trimmer on a cut, cracked or swollen pad. A trimmer is not a nail tool: for nails, see our guides to dog nail clippers and nail grinders.
If your dog will not let you near its feet, a groomer can tidy paws in a few minutes during a regular visit. Salons that run on GroomBoard note how each dog handles paw work, so the groomer knows before the dog is on the table which ones need a slow start.
